Student Council
SLOT has a Student Council that coordinates and organizes events and activities for the students under the guidance of teachers, moderators, and the principal while providing youth development.
The Student Council recently hosted a dance for 7th and 8th graders, which was a great success. Students had a great time! They've been busy planning events for Spirit Week, including Pajama Day, a pep rally, and other themed events. They will end the week with an election for next year's Student Council members; students will present their speeches to the student body and then students will vote for their leaders. It has been a great year with Student Council, and we are looking forward to a strong start next year!
Microfinance Baking Club
The St. Lawrence O'Toole School Baking Club was started by a group of 7th graders and now has members from several grades. We hold monthly bake sales at our school, and all profits are used to help fund microloans to people around the globe who don't have access to tradtional bank loans. We are responsible for all baking and decorating, selling and selecting borrowers through a non-profit organization called Kiva. So far we have helped support people across the globe, including one company here in Oakland. We help them do things such as improve their homes, continue their education, and expand their businesses. As the loans are repaid, the funds are lent to new people. You can find out about the loans we've made by visiting www.kiva.org - Team St. Lawrence Baking Club.
Tiger Technology Coding Club
Coding Club meets each Tuesday between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and is open to students in grades 4 through 8 and who have an interest in learning coding and integrating technology into education. The coding club is free of charge and can be joined at any time. Beginning students start by learning basic block coding and fundamental software concepts like loops and functions. Advanced students progress to HTML, CSS, Javascript and other programming languages.
